WHAT'S INCLUDED

 

3 days of wilderness and expedition medicine teaching by our incredible team of instructors qulifying you with the 16hr Outdoor First-aid Qualification required for ML/WML/IML etc. , 2 nights of camping in the beautiful Peak District.

Course Syllabus


Our 16 hour Outdoor First Aid course offers a busy and interactive training package focussed on giving you the skills to manage casualties in both an urban and wilderness context.  

 

The training aims to be as practical as possible and allows plenty of time for repetition to aid skills retention. No previous first aid experience is needed. Participants from the age of 16 upwards are welcome. The course timings are 9 am to 6pm on both days.

 

Topics covered will include:
* Assessments of situations and casualty
* Airway, breathing and circulation assessments
* Emergency resuscitation (including use of AED’s)
* Safe airway positions
* Dealing with choking
* Treatment of severe bleeding and shock
* Major injuries, including chest, head and pelvic injuries
* Treatment of fractures
* Heat and Cold problems (hypothermia and hyperthermia)
* Life threatening medical conditions such as heart attack, asthma, diabetes, strokes, seizures, burns and anaphylactic shock
* Injury management in an outdoor situation
* Incident management scenarios
Successful candidates will be issued with an electronic certificate valid for 3 years.
 

 

 

Day 1:

* Normal welcome + ice breaker games
* Primary survey 
* Taking Obs in the real world 
* Calling for help - ATMIST and SBAR tools 
* Methods and limitations of evacuation - lifts and carries + radio comms 
* Common conditions - run as stations - inc ankle sprain,/ wrist / shoulder w sling, choking, asthma, epilepsy, angina and diabetes


Day 2:

* Cold injuries including hypothermia and frost nip/bite
* Heat injuries including burns, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, blisters, dehydration
* Drowning/near drowning
* Electric shock (lightning for example)
* Bites and stings, including sheep/deer ticks
* Substance abuse and poisoning
* Wild CPR 
 

 

 

*Please note the trip is fully self-catered, so you will need to bring your own food and camping stove to cook on.

UE will provide hot and cold drinks, Acess to drinkig water and site facitilies.
